w227 Winkel Architect Desk Lamp — Aluminium. Wästberg
Dirk Winkel
The evolution of the ultimate work lamp.
Berlin-based designer Dirk Winkel set out to create a lamp that is a real mechanical tool, with no superfluous element, rejecting the fragile aesthetics of classic desk lamps. The idea is a lighting machine, as solid as workshop equipment, but with the fineness of contemporary lines.
Material & Technique: The body is not standard plastic but a glass-fibre-reinforced bio-polyamide (castor-oil based), recyclable and ultra-resistant. This material allows full, matte sections, evoking industrial ceramics. On the lighting side, COB (Chip-on-Board) technology diffuses a full, wide light, ideal for working without fatigue.

Full Light (COB LED):A unique diode technology that diffuses a wide and homogeneous light, eliminating unpleasant multiple shadows.
Solar color rendering (CRI > 97):Exceptional color fidelity, close to natural light, ideal for creative work.
Biopolyamide material:A structure made of reinforced technical composite, offering mechanical strength while remaining lightweight.
Intelligent management:Integrated intensity dimmer and automatic shut-off timer (9h) to control consumption.
Anti-glare protection:Reflector and prismatic diffuser designed to protect the eye, even during direct exposure.

High-performance lighting
The entire concept of the w227 Winkel alu rests on delivering state-of-the-art lighting — and this is where it truly excels. Built around a COB LED, it is an intelligently engineered lighting solution within a system of several individual elements. Each plays a vital role in delivering high-quality, dimmable light, generously yet remarkably evenly distributed across a wide area.
Effective glare protection
The w227 Winkel alu features an effective anti-glare design that prevents glare without any significant loss of luminosity.
Recycled and recyclable aluminium
Aluminium is not only a classic, proven and infinitely recyclable material: its strength and lightness allow durable, resource-efficient construction. The w227 Winkel alu is made of partially recycled aluminium that can, in turn, be recycled at the end of its long life cycle.
Adapts effortlessly
Designed to integrate seamlessly into modern working environments, the w227 Winkel alu offers two mounting options (on a base or on a clamp — please ask for this option) and is available in white and black.
Full-spectrum LED
Designed to recreate the full, continuous chromatic spectrum of sunlight, full-spectrum light has a rich, deep quality impossible to achieve with the limited spectrum of a standard LED. It also offers superior colour rendering, making it an ideal choice for environments where accurate colour perception is vital.
Raw finish
The w227 Winkel alu is available in a raw aluminium finish (tumble-patinated), with no added coatings or protective treatments. This allows resource-efficient production, easier recycling and a graceful ageing process. From day one, its naturally textured surface offers rich tactile depth, where any marks from production simply add character. Over time, stains, fingerprints and oxidation will evolve into a beautifully distinctive patina.
Designer Dirk Winkel
Dirk Winkel is a product designer based in Berlin, graduated from the Royal College of Art in London (MA Design Products) in 2010. Specialising in lighting and furniture design, he founded his design studio in Berlin in summer 2011. Driven by the idea of formal purism as a fundamental principle of sustainability, he is particularly interested in exploring the limits of mass-production techniques, in rethinking the paradigms of light and lighting, and in studying new materials and their ecological and aesthetic potential.
Since 2012, he has taught Construction in Design within the Industrial Design course at the UdK Berlin (University of the Arts Berlin). In 2022, he was appointed visiting professor in product design at the HBKsaar. His work has received numerous awards and nominations including the Swedish Design Award (Svensk Form), the Designs of the Year (London Design Museum), the German Design Award (Special Mention) and the Editors' Choice Award (Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair).
