A reissue that looks forward. The 1951 stacking chair reinterprets a forgotten Emeco model, found at a flea market and dated 1951.

Designed in 2005 by Adrian van Hooydonk and the BMW Designworks studio, the 1951 keeps Emeco's DNA — simple, sturdy, utilitarian — while giving it a dynamic stance. Its hand-crafted frame in 80 % recycled aluminium is paired with a seat and back made of recycled plastic (PET from bottles).

Recycled aluminium makes for a light structure — 4.5 kg — of unfailing strength. The recycled-PET seat and back come in six colours, all approved for outdoor use. The chairs stack six high for easy storage.

Responsible manufacturing, built to last

Made in Emeco's historic workshop in Hanover, Pennsylvania, the 1951 combines recycled aluminium and recycled plastic — recycled and recyclable. Carbon footprint: 14.34 kg CO₂e. Seat certified to fire standard TB-133, structure compliant with ANSI/BIFMA X5.1.

One day, we came across a forgotten Emeco chair at a flea market. It was dated 1951. We decided it was time to bring it back to life. The updated version keeps the classic Emeco frame in hand-formed recycled aluminium, and a seat in 100% recycled plastic. The past seats the future.

Recycled aluminium + recycled PET: the smart combination

The recycled-aluminium frame pairs with a seat and back made from recycled plastic bottles (rPET). Recycling aluminium saves 95% of the energy required for its primary production. PET, one of the most widespread plastics in the world, is thus diverted from landfills and oceans to become a chair built to last.

All-weather materials

All 1951 seat colours are approved for outdoor use. The aluminium frame is both strong and light; chairs and stools stack six high for easy storage.
