When leftovers become the main course
"Imagine," says Philippe Starck, "there is a man who takes a humble broom and starts sweeping the workshop, and out of this dust of nothing he creates a new magic. That is why we call it Broom."
Philippe Starck
"Working with Emeco allowed me to take a recycled material and turn it into something that never needs to be thrown away."
Philippe Starck was one of the first designers to pull the Navy chair out of its original context and place it in modern, design-driven environments. When Gregg Buchbinder had just taken over Emeco in 1999, he crossed paths with Starck in a corridor of the ICFF trade show in New York. Gregg said: "Mr. Starck, thank you for using our chairs at the Paramount Hotel." After a brief thought, Starck asked: "The Navy Chair? You own the company? I thought it belonged to a group of old military men! I would like to design a chair for Emeco." So began a close, lasting and productive relationship between Emeco and Philippe Starck — a relationship that set in motion Emeco's transformation from US Navy supplier into one of the leading designer-furniture brands.
