Unchanged
The original. Hand-built from recycled aluminium in Hanover, Pennsylvania, since 1944. Tested to last 150 years.
Nobody else makes chairs this way. Nobody else can. It takes a human eye to know when the work is done. And it takes human hands to get there.
Choosing aluminium is smart
Aluminium is super strong, light and fire-resistant. It is also corrosion-resistant, non-magnetic and antibacterial. And it can be recycled endlessly.
It wasn't about style
In the middle of the Second World War, the US Navy needed seating. They ordered a chair that was to be light, non-corrosive, fire-resistant and "torpedo-proof". Emeco rose to the challenge.
With clear purpose
We began by making chairs for US Navy ships during the Second World War. The Navy needed a chair that was light, non-corrosive, fire-resistant, non-magnetic and torpedo-proof. With the help of Alcoa experts, we developed a unique 77-step process that turns reclaimed aluminium into chairs of extraordinary strength. Today we still make them the same way, as approved by the US Navy in 1944, at our Hanover, Pennsylvania factory.
Lifetime warranty
Our all-aluminium chairs and stools come with a lifetime warranty. Their estimated lifespan is 150 years or more. Their longevity — both in design and manufacture — means they can be passed down from generation to generation.
Recycled. Recyclable. Endlessly
Most of the aluminium produced in the late 1800s is still very much alive today. In cans, in computer parts — and in Emeco furniture. Recycling aluminium saves 95 % of the energy required to produce the same quantity from virgin source.
Low carbon footprint
Recycled aluminium keeps the carbon footprint of our products exceptionally low, from as little as 8.42 kg CO2e. For context, a chair made from virgin materials typically has a footprint of 30 to 60 kg CO2e. Combined with the long lifespan of our products, this ensures that our furniture rests lightly on the planet.
Approved for outdoor use
Aluminium is non-corrosive. Perfect for outdoor use in all weather, including by the sea. Aluminium does not heat up in the sun, which means you will not burn your hands or legs on contact. We guarantee our hand-brushed anodised finish and our powder-coated finishes for outdoor applications.
Easy to clean
Aluminium is easy to maintain and retains its appearance over time. Its antibacterial properties make it particularly suited to sensitive environments such as healthcare facilities. Our durable anodised finish can be cleaned with bleach and pressure-washed.
Light
Aluminium is light, which makes handling, moving, cleaning beneath, as well as setting up and reconfiguring flexible spaces, easier. Many of our chair models are also stackable for efficient storage. For roof terraces and other wind-exposed applications, we can add weight to the product without changing its appearance.
