The 20-06 was born from a meeting in 2003 between Gregg Buchbinder (Emeco) and John Small (Foster + Partners) at the NeoCon fair in Chicago. Norman Foster wanted a "neutral" chair, using as little material as possible while being as strong as possible — and lighter still than Frank Gehry's Superlight.

Handmade in Hanover, Pennsylvania, from 80% recycled aluminium. Lifetime warranty.

A slender, fully welded tube

The prototype was riveted; because heat treatment distorted the structure, the final version is fully welded. Its very fine 0.75″ square tube, with a thickened wall and reinforced curves, gives it a light silhouette: just 3 kg, with strength tested to 1,000 lb (about 450 kg).

"I like the anonymity of the chair, which fits perfectly with our vision of interior space." — Norman Foster

Indoors, outdoors, marine environments

Stacks 12 high. Approved for outdoor and marine environments, fireproof, compliant with ANSI/BIFMA X5.1. Carbon footprint: 12.72 kg CO₂e. Delivered assembled, on TPU glides (specific glides for hard floors or carpet as an option).

Finish and options

Hand-brushed aluminium (clear anodised). Seat pads or seat and back pads as an option, on request. It can be found at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas and at Drexel University in Philadelphia, among others.

Also in the range: the 20-06 armchair. Another Emeco aluminium classic: the Hudson chair.
