How it works

The wall rail in birch or oak fixes directly to the wall. A patented 20° mechanism lets every module of the system clip in without screws, without tools, without plastic shims. You move a shelf, raise a desk, add a locker, shift a mirror: no extra holes, no rework. The wall becomes an open system.

In practice, you buy one or several rails (60 to 280 cm depending on your wall), then the modules that make up your configuration. If the room changes purpose six months later, you reconfigure. You don't have to replace everything, you don't have to retouch the wall.

More than thirty modules available

The Variand catalogue covers five module families, all compatible with any rail in the collection: shelves, fold-down desk, wardrobe and shoe rack, open or closed lockers, accessories (hooks, trays, mirror, whiteboard).

Specialised rails complete the range: magnetic strip rail to hold photos and notes, cork strip rail for pinning, picture-rail with groove for displaying cards and illustrations without mounting them, dimmable LED-lit rail (with wall switch or remote control), and electrified rail for clip-on LED spots and USB-C ports.

Four finishes

Natural birch, solid oak, lacquered white, lacquered black. Steel modules come in white or anthracite. The finishes mix and match: a birch rail can hold a white locker and an oak shelf — the whole stays coherent because every module is drawn within the same formal logic.

Made in South Tyrol

Variand was founded in 2020 in Cologne by four trained architects. Manufacturing is set up near Brixen, in South Tyrol (Italy), in collaboration with local craftsmen. Birch plywood, solid oak, powder-coated steel: materials are chosen for longevity and for being repairable rather than replaceable.

The manufacturing model is what allows modules to fit together perfectly year after year: machining precision and dimensional reproducibility are the conditions for a modular system that stays compatible with itself as it grows.

What for

Variand suits spaces that need to stay flexible rather than rooms that are set in stone. Four typical use cases:

Home office

Fold-down desk + closed locker + integrated LED light + bag hook. The desk folds away in the evening, the room becomes a guest bedroom or reading corner again.

Entrance

Garderobe + shoe rack + mirror + key tray + hooks for shopping bags. The whole sits on the wall: the floor stays free for the vacuum cleaner.

Living room

Floating bookshelf in shelves aligned across two rails. Visually airy, storage capacity equivalent to a floor-standing bookshelf, without filling the space.

Studio or bedroom

Evolving configuration: a single rail with a few starter modules, progressive extension as needs change. Suited to tenants who'll move in two or three years — the system unclips, transports, reinstalls elsewhere.

Recognition

Variand received the German Design Award 2023 for its innovative approach to modular furniture, and was a finalist of the Coliving Awards 2024 in the Interior & Furniture Design category. The system is installed in around twenty coliving, apart-hotel and coworking projects across Germany, Austria and Italy, and is now arriving in France via Antifer.
