Jasper Morrison

British designer born in 1959, Jasper Morrison has developed for forty years an approach to design he calls “Super Normal”: objects so obvious, so right in their function, that they become almost invisible in everyday use.
Trained at the Royal College of Art in London, Morrison refuses signature design in favour of absolute discretion. His creations — for Vitra, Flos, Alessi, Emeco — stand out by their formal restraint: balanced proportions, frank materials, careful details without demonstration.
This aesthetic of effacement is not decorative minimalism but an ethic of service: a well-designed object does not need to attract attention to perform. It simply has to function, last, age well.
Morrison perfectly embodies the British design tradition: pragmatism, sobriety, respect for the everyday. His objects survive trends because they never sought to follow them.
Jasper Morrison: “Let's not forget that people have to live with the objects we design… Design is something real.”
Gregg Buchbinder, owner and CEO of Emeco: “The 1 Inch, Alfi, Navy Lounge and Navy Officer collections all reflect the shared appreciation of Emeco and Jasper Morrison for the invisible qualities behind simplicity. When I saw the ‘Super Normal’ exhibition of 2006 at the Axis Gallery in Tokyo, of which Jasper was the curator, I understood his design philosophy and how his sensibility aligned with Emeco's values of timeless simplicity. As we have worked together on our collections, Jasper's rigorous attention to every detail — materials, engineering, resistance, comfort, finish, colour — continues to fascinate me.”
