Since 1944, chairs built to last

Emeco has been making chairs in Hanover, Pennsylvania, since 1944, using a 77-step manual process. The 1006 Navy Chair was commissioned by the US Navy: a lightweight, non-corrosive, fire-resistant and “torpedo-proof” chair.

It is still produced today to the same drawings, in 80% recycled aluminium, hand-polished, approved for outdoor use, guaranteed for life with an expected service life of 150 years. Three kilos, two hundred kilos of load, no maintenance.

Durability across six models

The 111 Navy, launched in 2010, transposes the 1006's robustness into rPET — at least 170 recycled bottles per chair, nine colourways, stackable. The Alfi, designed by Jasper Morrison, combines recycled polypropylene, wood fibres and solid ash legs.

Philippe Starck's Broom is made of 90% recycled polypropylene and sawmill scraps — stackable six high, frost-resistant. Morrison's 1 Inch completes the entry-level range. The French Blocmetal, in aluminium, adds a European alternative.

Frequently asked questions

The dining chair is the most used object in a home — sat in daily, moved around, stacked, cleaned. The Emeco aluminum editions shown here (1006 Navy, 1 Inch Reclaimed) have one peculiarity: they're guaranteed 150 years, and the 1944 originals are still in service.

Can the 1006 Navy stay outdoors year-round?

Yes. Anodised aluminium is non-corrosive, non-magnetic and naturally fireproof. The 1006 is approved for outdoor use with no restriction; only the TPU glides may be replaced after several years of use.

How many bottles in a 111 Navy?

At least 170 recycled plastic bottles per chair under the current specification. The name "111" refers to the original 2010 spec — the process has since integrated more recycled material.

Where are these chairs made?

All Emeco production remains in Hanover, Pennsylvania, at the historic factory.

Are the chairs stackable?

The 1006, 111 Navy, 1 Inch and Broom all stack six high. The Alfi is not stackable — its solid ash frame is built for single placement.
