The wall as a playground
Variand was born from a simple idea: modern furniture should be able to move. Founded in early 2020 by four friends, young architects and entrepreneurs, between Cologne and Brixen in South Tyrol, the brand has developed a system of wooden wall rails with a patented hanging mechanism, onto which shelves, coat racks, desks, mirrors and accessories are hung — and moved freely.
How it works
The birch or oak rail is fixed to the wall. All modules clip onto it without tools, thanks to a patented 20° mechanism. You configure, reconfigure and extend as your interior evolves. No extra holes, no screws to redo — just move things around.
Modules for every use
Single or double shelves, a wall desk, a coat rack with hanging rail, shoe racks, a mirror, a whiteboard, open or door-fronted cabinets, shelflets, hooks, kitchen holders (kitchen roll holder, wine glass holder) and a bike holder. On top of this come rails with magnets, a pin strip or a picture rail to display photos and illustrations, LED-lit rails (dimmable in the remote-controlled version) and powered rails for LED spots and a USB-C charging socket.
Four finishes
Four finishes for the rails: natural birch, white, black and solid oak. Shelves come in birch or oak plywood; the steel parts are powder-coated in matt white. All parts are made in South Tyrol (Italy), near Brixen, in collaboration with local craftsmen. The materials are chosen for their durability and for how well they age.
What it is for
Variand suits spaces that need to stay flexible: a home office that turns into a guest room, an entrance that has to hold jackets, mail, keys and parcels without cluttering the floor, a studio that changes layout every six months, a living room that wants a visually light bookcase. The floor stays clear, the wall does the work.
Recognition
Variand received the German Design Award 2023 for its hanging mechanism. The system furnishes, among others, the 60 apartments of the WERK1 coliving space in Munich.
